Mid-America Mensa (MAM) once again participated at Planet Comicon, one of the leading science-fiction Comicon’s in the U.S. We participate as a great way to advertise our name and work to recruit members to over 50,000 attendees embracing their inner geek.

This year was the 25th anniversary of the event, held across three days at the KC Convention Center. You could feel the energy as thousands lined up in basic themed t-shirts to full out cosplaying as characters from the Mandalorian, Halo, Mario Bro’s, X-Men, and Ghost Busters.

Featured stars included favorite comic book and Hollywood artists, cast members from Scream, Ian McDiarmid (Emperor Palpatine of Star Wars), and some of the cast of Happy Days, including Henry Winkler.

For the second year in a row, we had a table located in the nonprofit area in the main hallway. Other nonprofits included VolunteerKC, Cos4Hope mental wellness and suicide prevention, and the Girl Scouts (with cookies!). We shared all about Mensa and MAM, the Mensa Foundation, the AG (Annual Gathering) coming to KC, gave out show-themed quizzes and discussed the many, many ways how someone can join Mensa, from our monthly testing to the over 100 other tests we accept.

Over three days, MAM board members Rob and Cynthia and volunteers including myself, Sara, Eugene, and the Rexins talked with hundreds of people about Mensa, MAM, and the Mensa Foundation. Many were interested in joining Mensa, asked about programs for gifted youth, and tried their best at our show-themed quiz. We collected 40 names and emails, most from who wanted more info on how to join.

Personally, while meeting some of the Hollywood stars like those previously mentioned is always fun, one of my highlights was having the opportunity to meet and talk with another NASA astronaut (last year Nicole Stott, this year Steve Swanson). Each year they help to raise money for charity as well as the Cosmosphere down in Wichita. BTW, if you have never been to the Cosmosphere, it is one of several fun things to do down there.

Several of us are checking into April’s Midwest GameFest (board games) as another opportunity for Mensa to shine. We plan to be back to Planet Comicon next year, March 21-23, 2025.
